Sketch for A Solitary Boot

1943

Drawing

16.4 x 20.4 cm (6 1/2 x 8 in)

Notes

Eliot and his wife Mimi were in Southwold, south of England, when Eliot noticed the boot. After Eliot finished drawing it, they went back to their car where a warden came rushing towards them. Little did the Hodgkins know, that the warden was looking for "two lunatics" walking on a mine field.

This sketch is in the collection of Harrow School, where Hodgkin studied from 1919 until 1923.
